The Plunge Project

The Perfect Dishes to Fit Your Wedding Style (06/11/14)

Outside of the menu, there are just so many considerations and plans that go into a wedding. Luckily, I have a wedding planner so I don’t get bogged down by any one detail.

When it comes to planning a wedding menu around a theme or style of wedding, there are many creative things you can do. Here are some tips and tricks for such an occasion.

The Plunge Project

How to Plan Your Wedding Menu Like a Chef (06/06/14)

As a bride-to-be and professional chef, I knew that the menu would be a huge part of my day. Planning a wedding menu like a chef doesn’t have to be as daunting as it may seem. When I say to plan like a chef, I really mean that you should do three main things: 1. Consider the number of guests attending. 2. Set your budget—and vow to stick to it. 3. Choose the main dish you will highlight.

Bridal Guide

50 Clever Wedding Tricks to Make Your Life Easier

Nisa Burns Cochran, a bride-to-be, chef, and the author of Kitchenability 101, tells us that late-night munchies are one of the hottest food trends at weddings. “By this time, you may have a few guests who have had one too many drinks and need a little food in their stomach. A few great examples are cookies, soft pretzels and popcorn,” she says.

Lace and Frill

Budget Savvy Bride

Choosing a Budget-Friendly Wedding Menu (03/27/14)

Some ways to infuse your own personal taste in a wedding menu are incorporating your favorite foods, knowing your risk tolerance and knowing what type of theme you will be having for your wedding. This is a great time to make it your own.

The food you choose or like reflects and highlights your own personality. Deciding between all of your favorite foods can be tough, but the key is to pick a few you love and stick with them. If you like mac and cheese, have mac and cheese!

The Cook’s Sister

Kitchenability 101 cookbook review (11/20/12)

Kitchenability 101 is a book after my own heart. Author Nisa Burns Cochran, recently a student herself, writes about healthy, affordable, and easy to make recipes for students (both who are experienced or new to cooking).

Top 10 Most Original Cranberry Recipe Ideas (11/19/12)

Move over, Swedish meatballs. This dish is probably the easiest of the bunch to make, so simple that even novice chefs can make it, with ingredients no more complicated than jellied cranberry sauce, sweet chili sauce, frozen, pre-cooked turkey meatballs, brown sugar and lemon juice. It comes from the new cookbook Kitchenability 101: The College Student’s Guide to Easy, Healthy, and Delicious Food by Chef Nisa Burns Cochran. She calls these meatballs “a wonderful party dish” and “a huge crowd pleaser.”

‘Kitchenability 101′ doesn’t require ramen (11/13/12)

Finally, somebody has done college-cooking right. “Kitchenability 101,” a “college student’s guide, to easy, healthy and delicious food” by author Nisa Burns Cochran, offers students with limited resources recipes that they won’t need a package of ramen noodles for. The book has recipes separated into two sections, for those with dorm rooms and those with apartments. The recipes then show students how to cook in a tiny, or nonexistent kitchen while fending off the freshman 15.

Healthy, cheap cooking for teens, college students in Nisa Burns Cochran’ ‘Kitchenability 101′ (11/7/12)

Burns hopes to reach an increasingly less-active age group that depends on fast food and 7-Elevens for meals, for whom the term “freshman 15″ (we’re talking pounds) was invented, whose food staples often consist of caffeine and pancakes during late-night study jams. She also offers an assist for parents who are eager to encourage better options for their severely budget-limited college students.

Review: Kitchenability 101 (11/4/12)

I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t cook a thing when I left for college. (I also couldn’t do laundry but that’s another story!) It wasn’t so bad when I was living in the dorms and eating at the dining halls, but when I got my first apartment, I was basically eating Kraft Mac & Cheese and Ramen noodles all of the time. (I now shiver at the thought!) With KITCHENABILITY 101, I wouldn’t have had to eat like that!

Kitchenability 101: A Cookbook for College Students (10/23/12)

When I was at UCLA and living in a tiny dorm room at Rieber Hall with a roommate, dining revolved around the student meal plan and our illicit popcorn maker. I know we had a mini fridge but I can’t remember what we put in it. Probably beer, of course, but I think there was butter for the popcorn and perhaps some fruit. It never occurred to me to try to cook in my room; that’s what the meal plan was for. And it showed; I gained that inevitable freshman 15.
