Keeping Baby safe in the Pool

Contributor Article By Lucy Wyndham

A Guide To Keeping Your Baby Healthy, Happy, And Safe In The Pool

There are many health benefits to both mom and her baby hitting the pool, however, the American Red Cross has found that 61% of children are unable to demonstrate five basic swimming skills. This finding shows the significance of giving little ones the best start in life by getting them used to the pool from an early age. It’s natural instinct to want to keep your baby safe, so it’s understandable if you’re a little cautious about taking your precious newborn into your garden pool, but, by following these safety tips there’s no need to worry.

The chemistry of the pool

It may have been some time since your pool was cleaned or used. Either way, before you and your newborn take a dip, it’s essential you check that the chemistry of your swimming pool is as it should be to ensure it’s free of germs and bacteria which could cause your baby to become unwell. If you’re heading over to use a friend’s pool, make sure you check their pool maintenance is up to date as you don’t want to risk your precious bundle of joy picking up an infection. It’s also important that the temperature of the water is just right as babies can’t regulate their body temperature in the same way older children and adults can. Babyswimming.com advises that the perfect water temperature for a young baby is between 90 and 92 degrees Fahrenheit.

Preparing for your baby’s first swim

Once the pool is ready, it’s time to pop your swimming costumes on and enjoy your first time in the pool together. Ensure your baby wears a swim proof nappy and keep a couple of spare ones handy in case of any accidents. While you can hold your baby in the water, you and your baby may be happier in an inflatable float, although, this isn’t recommended if your little one can’t support their own neck. You may feel anxious and nervous about whether your child will enjoy the pool, but try to stay calm and relaxed to prevent him or her from picking up on any negative emotions.

Health and safety tips

Babies have very sensitive skin and chlorine can really dry it out and leave it feeling a little sore. Therefore, after your swim, it’s important to wash your baby’s skin with clean water and apply a suitable moisturizing cream and nappy ointment to help restore moisture. As it’ll be you and your baby’s first time in your garden pool, it’s advisable to have a family member or friend join you so that they can help the two of you get safely in and out of the pool.

Any new mom will want to ensure they’ve taken all the necessary precautions before taking their newborn into the pool for the first time. Ensuring you have the right pool chemistry, are prepared for your swim and consider yours and your little one’s health and safety at all times, you can be sure of an enjoyable experience which you’ll never forget.
