Avoiding Home Improvement Nightmares for Newlyweds
Are you a newlywed too? Are you finally deciding to take on a home project without pulling your hair out, or without looking at your wallet and going, “Ummm… How will I afford this?” Well, welcome to my world, because that’s where we are at.
A few months back, we had water damage in the master bathroom upstairs. And believe me, it’s no easy task to take something like that on a WEEK before your wedding day! It is time consuming, stressful, and expensive….
Well, let’s fast forward to six months later…. After many checks being written, multiple hardware store visits, and possibly thinking I’ve grown my first grey hair because, as if sharing a bathroom with three to four people isn’t annoying enough, I’m also storing my crap anywhere there is free space, the bathroom is still partly under construction. Home projects take time, money, and patience. If you don’t have all three, you will literally go crazy.
So, we have had a pipe bust, construction guys in and out of our bathroom and a layer of white dust all over our bedroom for weeks. The end result will be wonderful once it’s done. We have to keep telling ourselves that. The process to get there has been financially draining, time consuming, and stressful on many occasions.
My husband and I have pulled through by leaving a line of communication open. We talk about what’s bothered us, we discuss what our obstacles are, and why we are stressed. We talk openly about our finances and our budget. It allows us to see each other’s side of the story. Some conversations turn into debates, some turn into arguments, some into resolutions, but we know in the end this damn bathroom needs to get done, and the only way to do it is to have patience, money set aside, and time set aside.
We hope all the other newlyweds going through a home project come out on the other side, too. There is hope and light at the end of this dark tunnel. We redid the whole kitchen a while ago and made it out alive, so let’s see if we can get through this bathroom!
