My New Year’s Resolution: Tennis, Anyone?

By Nisa Burns

I decided to participate in the whole “New Year’s resolutions” thing this year. My resolution for 2013? To start playing tennis!

Now, I am not a very coordinated person, and I have many friends and family who would back me up on that statement. In middle school, I wanted to try out for softball and field hockey, and neither endeavor went too well. Then, in high school, I tried soccer….. Hmm, let’s not even go there. :)

I guess what I’m trying to say is Nisa and sports are not a match made in heaven.

History proves that I don’t completely lack coordination, though. In high school I was involved in theater and dance, both of which I loved. And, both do require some amount of non-clumsiness.

When college hit (culinary school), I pretty much ditched all non-cooking-related hobbies altogether and became consumed with the kitchen.

Then, after college, I started Kitchenability, which meant more cooking, more focus on the kitchen and still no time to nurture other hobbies and interests. Once I started Kitchenability, it really became my main focus and has been ever since. Some days, it’s all I think about, or talk about.

In 2013, I’ve decided I need to step away from my desk at least once a week. And so, despite my lack of a knack for coordination and all things sports, I am going to challenge myself and try to pick up tennis.

I am all signed up to start beginner lessons at the end of January and I’m excited to see what this may bring. Sometimes it’s terrifying to step out of your comfort zone, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need. Facing your fears, whatever they may be, is a great New Year’s resolution.

So, I challenge you to face a fear this year. Do something you never expected. Chase your dreams. Sign up to learn a new sport like me, or go someplace you have never been before. Get out of your everyday routine. Go on a run and take a different route than normal. Just challenge yourself to do something different, and then see what happens.

Let’s start 2013 off right and challenge ourselves to do something fun and something a little scary. I’ll keep you posted on how my new adventure goes, and I hope to hear about yours.
