March 9 is National Meatball Day!
To celebrate, consider making my Sweet Chili Cranberry Meatballs appetizer recipe. It’s a fun dish for parties that adds a tasty twist to the standard meatball-and-toothpick app.
The recipe calls for using frozen turkey meatballs, which I recommend because it will make the dish a lot healthier….which means you can feel good about gobbling up more than one! (more…)

Yep, that’s right. Tomorrow, February 26, is National Pistachio Day. Thank you to The Nibble, by the way, for posting such an awesome national food holidays calendar. I like to check it out from time to time to see what upcoming foods or dishes are being honored, so I can help celebrate on Kitchenability. Like, with the pistachio. Seriously.
Pistachios are my favorite nut. And I firmly believe it isn’t possible to eat just one. Have you ever tried? Impossible! They are just too good. And, eating a bunch of pistachios is actually okay — as long as you don’t eat the whole bag — because they contain fewer calories and more potassium and vitamin K per serving than other nuts. (more…)

Did you know that January 20 is National Granola Bar Day? In honor of the occasion, I’m including one of my granola bar recipes below, along with two other gluten free treats!
My best friend has a lot of food allergies and is restricted from eating certain things like dairy, soy, and wheat — to name a few. So, since she’s so limited, we decided to make our own granola bars, fruit roll-ups and rice krispie treats — all made from ingredients she can eat. (more…)

I once had the honor of helping to host a baby shower for one of my dearest friends. I cooked all of the food at the party, and man did I cook!
I made a lot of different appetizers, including several items from Kitchenability 101, like my Sweet Chili Cranberry Meatballs, Pigs in a Snuggie, asparagus wrapped in bacon, and Mediterranean pasta.
I also made cucumber tea sandwiches shaped like owls to fit with the party’s theme. Everyone loved them! (more…)

September 16 may have been National Guacamole Day, but November 14 is National Spicy Guacamole Day!
One of my all-time favorite go-to snacks is dipping chips into some fresh, homemade guacamole. And what better to pair with a bowlful of guacamole than a cool margarita. Mmmm… (more…)

How good do Recipe Girl’s Pumpkin Pie Pop Tarts look (click for image)?! I’ve been poking around the web looking for spooky Halloween recipes and wanted to share some of my favorites.
First, I have to of course share my tasty Pumpkin Muffins recipe. These are the perfect little pumpkin-y bites for bringing with you to Halloween parties or, really, any fall-time festivities. Then, there’s my Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte — great for pre-Trick-or-Treat sipping to keep you warm (just skip the ice cubes and serve it hot)!
And, here are a few more fun treats for you to enjoy:

With school back in session and fall quickly approaching, I’ve been in an apple-snacking mood.
One of my favorite ways to eat apples is to slice them up and dip them into this sweet and tangy cream cheese dip—a recipe my fiancé’s mom used to make and serve quite often when he was growing up.
It’s a quick and hearty snack that you can make in five minutes or less! (more…)

Did you know this Sunday, August 31 is National Trail Mix Day?
I love to assemble different varieties of trail mix for easy and healthy grab-and-go snacks. I buy different nuts and treats and create different mixes to keep things interesting.
One of my favorite mixes, which you can find in Kitchenability 101: The College Student’s Guide to Easy, Healthy and Delicious Food, has been dubbed “Nutty Mix.” I’ve included the recipe below. It’s super easy to mix up, toss in your bag and head off to class. (more…)
